Tinubu writes Senate to confirm Amupitan as INEC boss, Omidiran as FCC chair

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Senate, seeking the screening and confirmation of Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The request was contained in a letter read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja.

In his correspondence, President Tinubu urged lawmakers to give the request prompt consideration, citing the importance of maintaining continuity in the electoral body’s leadership.

“The President is seeking expeditious consideration and approval by the Senate,” Akpabio announced while reading the letter before senators.

Following the reading of the letter, the Senate President referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for legislative action, promising that screening and confirmation would commence “as soon as practicable.”

In a separate letter, President Tinubu also nominated Mrs Ayo Omidiran as the new Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), alongside 28 others as Federal Commissioners.

Among the nominees is Dr Ibrahim Abdullahi from Kwara State, who was named as one of the regional representatives.

The Senate is expected to commence screening of the nominees in the coming days, with expectations of a swift confirmation process in line with the President’s request.

The nominations mark part of President Tinubu’s ongoing restructuring of key national institutions, particularly those with oversight on governance transparency and electoral integrity.

As of press time, details of the nominees’ profiles and screening timetable were yet to be released, but sources within the National Assembly confirmed that committee-level discussions had already begun to fast-track the process.

Further updates are expected as the Senate moves to deliberate on the President’s letters in plenary.
