Political parties in Nigeria are coalitions or groups of politicians of similar views and ideologies who contribute to the betterment of any candidate they put forward. Political parties were adopted to promote healthy competition amongst politicians and offer opposition to the ruling political party.

These political parties hold primary elections where they vote for their representative in major elections like gubernatorial elections, presidential elections etc against other political parties. Formerly there were over 91 registered political parties in Nigeria which were outrageous as many of them have existent memberships.

However, in recent years INEC has drastically reduced the number to 18 political parties.

There are eighteen registered political parties in Nigeria and their slogans. These parties are the top 18 that were registered from the previous 93 existing political parties in Nigeria.

Some of these political parties dominate certain parts of the country and others have been riding steadily over the years.

1. Accord (A)

The accord party slogan is “oneness and progress”. This political party was founded by a former Lagos state governor or national senator. The accord party has its headquarters in Wuse, Abuja.

2. Action Alliance (AA)

The action alliance party slogan is “let the masses live”. This political party was formed in 2005 by the then-governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha. He planned to run for president in the 2007 elections under the party. The party headquarters are in Garki, Abuja.

3. African Action Congress (AAC)

The African Action Congress’s slogan is “take it back – Action”. This political party was founded in 2018 by Omo Yele Sowore. He wanted to run for president in the 2019 elections under the political party. The party’s headquarters is located in the central business district, of Abuja.

4. African Democratic Congress (ADC)

The African democratic congress slogan is “arise and shine”. This political party was originally named Alliance for Democratic Change and was founded in 2005. The party’s headquarters is located in Abuja.

5. Action Democratic Party (ADP)

The action democratic party slogan is “one destiny”. This political party was formed in 2017 to try and reduce the concentration of power in the two major political parties in Nigeria, APC and PDP. The political party was aimed at breaking the social stunted growth due to bad leadership.

6. All Progressives Congress (APC)

The All Progressive Congress slogan is ” change”. This political party was formed on the 6th of February 2013 as a merger of three minor parties. APC’s logo is of a hand holding a broom.

The political party dominates the Southwest and Northern parts of Nigeria which is populated by the Yoruba and Hausa tribes respectively. APC is the political party of the current president of Nigeria.

7. All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)

The all Progressive grand alliance is one of the functions of political parties in Nigeria. This political party was formed in 2003 and has minor influence in the South Eastern parts of Nigeria, especially in Ebonyi state where APGA is a strong contender in their gubernatorial elections.

8. Allied Peoples Movement (APM)

The allied people’s movement party slogan is “Nigeria first”. This political party was formed and registered with INEC in 2018.

The political party operates on the principle that Nigerian should have better infrastructure, better national security and human rights.

9. Action Peoples Party (APP)

The action people’s party slogan is “strong economy – united Nigeria”. This political party was formed with the aim of promoting free and fair elections in Nigeria.

The party believe in the human rights and freedoms of the Nigerian people which include freedom of speech, freedom to the dignity of a person etc.

10. Boot Party (BP)

The boot party slogan is “because of our tomorrow”. This political party got the name boot from Because Of Our Tomorrow abbreviated.

The party was established to promote technology in the government for Nigerians. The party aims to produce zealous and passionate leaders who are equipped with tech knowledge and how it can be utilized in serving Nigerians

11. Labour Party (LP)

The labour party’s slogan is “equal opportunity and social justice”. This political party which was formed in 2002 is a socio-democratic party.

The party was recently brought into the spotlight by the deflection of former Anambra state governor, Peter Obi from PDP to the LP in order to run for president in the 2023 elections.

12. National Rescue Movement (NRM)

The national rescue movement party slogan is “together we can rescue our nation Nigeria”. This political party was formed in 1999 but registered with INEC in 2018.

The party aims to lead Nigeria to become an independent nation in terms of our economy and democracy. The NRM political party believe in the unity of Nigeria and its ability to save our nation.

13. New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)

The New Nigeria people’s party slogan is “peace, equality and progress”. This political party was formed in 2000 with the majority of its influence in Kano state.

However, it is until recently when the current governor of Kano deflected to the NNPP, that their popularity has steadily been increasing in the country.

14. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

The People’s Democratic Party slogan is “power to the people”. This political party was formed in 1998 and is one of the most popular and powerful political parties in Nigeria.

The PDP logo shows an umbrella. The party is the major opposition to the current ruling party APC and contents for the major elected positions in Nigeria.

15. Peoples Redemption Party (PRP)

The people redemption party’s slogan is “victory”. This political party was formed in September 1978 by Mallam Aminu Kano’s supporters.

The party is open to any citizen of Nigeria who wants to run for office and shares their views of one Nigeria and unity for all regardless of their ethnicity, religious belief, location etc.

16. Social Democratic Party (SDP)

The social democratic party slogan is “progress”. This political party was formed in December 1989 by a former military president of Nigeria, Ibrahim Babangida (IBB). The party is a coalition of three smaller parties and is a socio-democratic political party. SDP’s influence is mainly in Northern Nigeria.

17. Young Progressive Party (YPP)

The young progressive party slogan is “shape the future”. This political party was formed on the 7th of June 2017 with the sole aim of sponsoring more youths into our elected positions.

The party is s socio-democratic party that believes that younger people in Nigeria should lead the country.

18. Zenith Progressive Alliance (ZPA)

The Zenith progressive alliance slogan is “equity, justice and religion”. This political party was until recently known as the Zenith Labour Party.

Formed initially as  Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) but has recently changed its name to Zenith Progressives Alliance (ZPA), the party aims for an inclusive and accepting political atmosphere in their party and in Nigeria at large.

To contest for an elected position in this country, you need to belong to registered and accredited political parties.

Political parties in Nigeria have taken up an almost cult-like tradition with hidden propaganda, godfathers, corruption and lust for power. Some of the most popular political parties in Nigeria are the people’s democratic party, the progressive congress and the labour party.
