ADC Accuses Tinubu of Plotting One-Party State, Slams Governors’ Defection

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, following the recent defections of some opposition governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the development had vindicated earlier warnings by the opposition coalition about what it described as the ruling party’s “grand plan to weaken democracy.”
Abdullahi said the defections of the Enugu and Bayelsa governors to the APC represented “a clear case of political apostasy,” adding that the governors had chosen personal interest over the welfare of their citizens.
“While it may seem like the APC has added more governors to its column, in reality, what has happened is that these governors have actually abandoned their people to team up with the ruling party that has made life miserable for the majority,” he stated.
He accused the defectors of betraying the opposition’s cause, arguing that the move would not weaken Nigerians’ resolve to vote for real change in 2027.

The ADC spokesman criticised the Tinubu administration, alleging that it had failed in virtually every sector — from the economy to security and governance.
“Nigerians can see the current state of the nation. They live through the APC’s failures every single day,” Abdullahi said. “Even those who once campaigned for the APC now avoid association with the party because this government has failed on insecurity, failed on economic management, failed on healthcare, failed on corruption, and failed to restore Nigeria’s standing internationally.”
He lamented that citizens were bearing the brunt of misgovernance through rising food prices, joblessness, and worsening insecurity.
Abdullahi vowed that the 2027 general election would mark a “battle between the Nigerian people and the APC government.”
“When the ruling party has misgoverned the country, the only hope for the people in a democracy is for the opposition to rise up, propose alternative ideas, and lead the people out of their misery.
“Instead of doing that, some governors abdicated their responsibilities and joined the ruling party for selfish reasons. They chose cowardice over conviction,” he said.
The ADC spokesman maintained that the opposition coalition remained committed to defending democracy and offering Nigerians a credible alternative, stressing that history would judge those who “chose to join the gravy train.”
“The people can see, and they are waiting,” Abdullahi declared. “2027 will be a clear battle between the people of Nigeria and President Tinubu and his gang of governors in the APC.”
The statement follows a recent wave of defections by key political figures to the ruling APC, including Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, both of whom left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the past week.
Their moves have fuelled speculation about the opposition’s strength and the ruling party’s dominance ahead of the next general election.
