Adeleke Appoints Davido As Chairman of Osun Sports Trust Fund

The Osun State Government has appointed Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund, in a move aimed at mobilising resources to transform the state’s sports sector.

The government also reaffirmed its determination to complete the renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, assuring that the upgraded facility would meet Olympic standards upon completion.

Confirming the appointment on Wednesday, the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, said the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke was taking deliberate steps to reposition sports as a driver of youth development and economic growth in the state.

“The ongoing renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium to meet Olympic standards is a project that will be completed in the shortest possible time,” Adewusi said.

He explained that the government’s long-term vision includes not only completing the stadium upgrade but also building a sustainable system for sports governance and funding across the state.

Adewusi disclosed that the introduction of a Sports Trust Fund was part of wider reforms designed to attract private investment and long-term sponsorship for grassroots and professional sports in Osun.

“Plans are in advanced stages towards the establishment of the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as a central body for sports administration, development, and policy implementation,” he said.
“The introduction of a Sports Trust Fund will attract support from sports philanthropists within and outside the state, ensuring sustainable sports financing and development.”

According to him, Davido’s appointment as chairman of the Fund was a strategic decision to leverage his global influence and network of supporters for the state’s benefit.

“Davido has been appointed to chair the Sports Trust Fund, and he did not hesitate in accepting the appointment. His intervention would attract funds that would impact Osun sports positively,” the deputy governor added.

Davido, a native of Ede in Osun State and nephew of Governor Adeleke, is one of Africa’s most recognised music exports. His appointment marks the first time an entertainer of his stature will head a state-level sports financing body.

Analysts believe the move could bridge the gap between entertainment and sports, opening new opportunities for youth empowerment, talent development, and international collaborations.

The government pledged that the Sports Trust Fund would operate transparently, with independent oversight mechanisms to ensure that funds raised are channelled towards infrastructure, athlete welfare, and youth sports programmes.

Officials said the initiative is expected to create jobs, foster talent discovery, and restore Osun’s pride of place in Nigeria’s sporting map.

“Our goal is to make Osun a hub for sporting excellence,” Adewusi said. “With the right structure and people like Davido driving this vision, we are confident of achieving lasting impact.”
