650 NNPP Members Defect to APC in Kano

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Thursday said the All Progressives Congress (APC) had concluded plans for its forthcoming national convention, urging party members to embrace unity and discipline ahead of the exercise.

Idris disclosed this at a meeting with journalists held at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, where he unveiled preparations and expectations for the convention scheduled for March 27 and 28.

The minister, who also serves as Co-Chairman of the convention’s Media and Publicity Committee, outlined key logistics and messaging strategies, stressing the need for collective effort among party stakeholders.

He charged members of the committee to work in unity to ensure effective communication and the successful delivery of the convention.

“A lot of sacrifice is expected from all, in line with the party’s vision for a united and disciplined approach to communicating to Nigerians,” Idris said.

Idris further reminded party members of the need to uphold strong internal democratic values, noting that the party must reflect the ideals of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“As party members, we must reflect a significant attribute of our president,” he added.

He described the upcoming convention as a critical milestone in the party’s efforts to strengthen its internal structures and democratic processes.

Meanwhile, the APC has confirmed it will adopt a consensus approach in selecting its national leadership during the convention.

The Assistant Secretary for Media and Publicity, Mary Ikoku, disclosed this during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television.

She, however, noted that the party had yet to determine how elective positions during primaries would be handled, adding that decisions could vary depending on local political dynamics.

The meeting was attended by governors and members of the party’s 2026 National Convention Central Coordination Committee, including its chairman and vice chairman, alongside other stakeholders.

Also present were the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; the Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga; and the Special Adviser on Public Communication and Orientation, Sunday Dare.

The convention is expected to provide a platform for APC members to elect national executives who will steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The new leadership will also be saddled with the responsibility of organising party primaries to produce candidates for the presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and House of Assembly polls.
