Atiku Set To Join ADC Today

Barring any last-minute change, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will on Monday formally register as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Daily Trust learnt on Sunday.

Sources close to the former VP confirmed that all arrangements have been concluded for him to pick up his ADC membership card at Jada Ward 1, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Atiku, who held a strategic meeting earlier in the day with the Adamawa ADC leadership in Yola, openly hinted at his imminent defection, describing the ADC as the new political home for his supporters across the country.

Addressing party members, he said: “In Nigeria as a whole, there is a new political movement, is it not so? Today, the new movement has taken us to where? To the ADC. So, the people of Adamawa and Nigeria, our new party is ADC, and our new leaders in Adamawa are here seated.”

He then asked supporters if they would accept him into the fold, and they responded with a resounding “Yes!”

Atiku went further to confirm that the formal registration would take place on Monday.

“After that, on Monday, I will be officially in the ADC. Before now, I was not in; you were there before me. Will you accept me?” he asked.

He added: “May God allow us to witness Monday. It is tomorrow; we are hopeful to meet tomorrow.”

Until now, there had been lingering doubts about the commitment of both Atiku and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the ADC—after the opposition coalition they jointly led adopted the party in July for the 2027 presidential election.

Their absence at the unveiling of the ADC’s new national secretariat last week further raised concerns about the unity and direction of the coalition.

Atiku’s impending defection is expected to reshape the political calculations ahead of 2027, particularly within opposition blocs seeking a unified platform against the ruling party.
