Bauchi Creates 29 New LGAs, Sends Bill to National Assembly
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has signed into law a bill establishing 29 additional local government areas in the state.
With this development, Bauchi, which currently has 20 constitutionally recognised councils, will operate 49 LGAs once the National Assembly ratifies the proposal.
A document obtained by Daily Trust revealed that the Acting Deputy Clerk of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Musa Yerima, forwarded the law to the Joint Committee on Constitutional Review for further action.
The letter, addressed to Senator Barau Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review, stated:
“I am pleased to inform you that the Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed into law, a bill to provide for the creation of 29 new additional local government areas in Bauchi State, 2025.
“The additional Local Government Areas are inchoate until such time as the National Assembly shall pass an Act to make consequential provisions with respect to the names of the said additional Local Government Areas as provided for under Section 8(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Yerima clarified that the law was passed in line with Section 100(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), but stressed that the new councils would only become operational after the National Assembly gives approval.
He wrote: “The said law is hereby forwarded to the Chairman Joint Committee on Constitution Review, National Assembly, for further necessary action, please.”
It is worth noting that Bauchi, with an estimated population of 10 million people, will become one of the states with the highest number of LGAs in the country if the National Assembly ratifies the request.
