A fire outbreak on Monday engulfed part of the Rivers State Government Secretariat in Port Harcourt, destroying offices within the building.

Eyewitnesses said the inferno affected the section housing the Rivers State Pension Board, though the cause of the fire had yet to be determined as of press time.

The incident caused panic among workers and passers-by, with emergency responders racing to the scene to contain the flames.

As of the time of filing this report, no casualties had been confirmed, while authorities were yet to issue an official statement on the cause or extent of the damage.

The development comes just weeks after President Bola Tinubu lifted the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, ending months of political tension in the oil-rich state.

It also follows the state of emergency declared in Rivers on March 18, 2025, over the political crisis that rocked the government and legislature.

Security operatives have since cordoned off the affected area, while civil servants were seen evacuating files and other belongings from adjoining offices.
