Dangote May Start Acquiring Petrol Stations in Nigeria, West Africa – Analyst Predicts

A financial analyst, Kalu Aja, has suggested that Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, could soon venture into acquiring filling stations across Nigeria and other West African countries.
Aja made the prediction in a post on his X handle on Thursday, noting that such a move would likely be the next strategic step for the billionaire’s 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery, which recently launched a major fuel distribution initiative.
“Watch out: I predict Dangote starts buying filling stations in West Africa,” Aja wrote.
The analyst described the development as a significant shift in the oil and gas landscape, though he couched it in colourful terms. “What we’re witnessing is the latest salvo in the horse lobby’s fight against the new car industry,” he added.

His comments follow Dangote Refinery’s announcement on September 15, 2025, of its nationwide fuel and diesel distribution plan.
The refinery disclosed that it had invested about ₦720bn in compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks to kick-start large-scale fuel distribution across Nigeria.
However, the initiative has not been without controversy. Several major players in the downstream oil sector rejected the scheme, describing it as potentially disruptive to existing market structures.
As of the time of filing this report, Dangote Refinery has not confirmed or announced any plan to purchase filling stations.
However, it is believed that such a move, if it happens, would consolidate the refinery’s grip on both production and distribution in the region’s energy market.
