Enugu PDP Ready for National Convention Despite Court Setback
The Enugu State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed its readiness to participate in the party’s upcoming National Convention, despite two Federal High Court rulings that have raised legal challenges to the exercise.
The convention is scheduled to take place on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
A Federal High Court in Abuja recently blocked the PDP’s convention, citing the party’s failure to meet legal requirements, including the lack of a published timetable for members and a 21-day notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The court ruling followed a lawsuit filed by former Jigawa Governor, Sule Lamido, who claimed he was denied the opportunity to purchase a chairmanship nomination form, further contributing to the court’s decision.
Despite these setbacks, Steve Oruruo, the acting state chairman of the PDP in Enugu, insisted that the Enugu chapter is fully prepared to participate in the convention.
Speaking after meetings with party organs in Enugu, Oruruo confirmed that all logistical and organizational arrangements, including delegate travel, have been completed.
“I just returned from Abuja, where I secured all the necessary materials for the convention. We have held meetings with our delegates, distributed uniforms, and finalized travel logistics. Our delegates from the South East, particularly Enugu, will be airlifted from Akanu Ibiam International Airport,” Oruruo said.
Oruruo emphasized that the Enugu PDP remains a strong and united force despite recent defections. The state chapter has sent about 81 delegates to the convention and is prepared to sponsor additional participants, depending on available resources.
“We are fully ready for the convention. Our preparations are solid, and we are confident that the party will continue to move forward united, regardless of the recent challenges,” Oruruo added.
The PDP in Enugu remains resolute in its determination to engage fully in the convention, despite the legal battles surrounding the event, showcasing the party’s commitment to ensuring a strong and unified presence at the national level.
