Ex-AGF, Malami Declares for Kebbi 2027 Governorship, Says ‘No Retreat’

Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has publicly declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.

Speaking during an interview with DCL Hausa on Monday, Malami expressed confidence that he would enjoy wide support across the state once formal campaigns begin.

“INEC guidelines do not allow mobilisation for now, but when the time comes, you will see that we have the support of the people,” he said.

“I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win because we have people who believe in us.”

Malami stated that his decision to join the race stemmed from a desire to confront insecurity, boost agricultural productivity and safeguard the welfare of Kebbi residents.
He maintained that the state’s potential remained underutilised and vowed to prioritise security and economic stability if elected.

Malami defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) earlier this year and has since aligned with coalition leaders working to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political stronghold ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His entry into the Kebbi governorship race marks one of the most significant declarations within the ADC bloc since the coalition movement began.

In a separate political development, hundreds of youths and women in Kano State on Monday staged a massive rally to endorse Abdussalam Abdulkarim Zaura, popularly known as A.A. Zaura, as their preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship poll.

Led by Hon. Iliyasu Hassan Gwazaye, the supporters marched through major streets wearing customised shirts and caps bearing Zaura’s portrait

Banners carried inscriptions such as: “People of Kano, we hereby endorse Zaura as our 2027 governorship candidate.”

The crowd, made up of men, women and young people, waved APC flags and chanted solidarity songs in support of Zaura.

Zaura, who previously contested the Kano Central senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress in 2023, has been widely speculated as a likely contender for the state’s top seat.

Addressing the crowd, Gwazaye said the rally was aimed at sensitising residents on the importance of supporting Zaura’s ambition.

He described the APC politician as the “most credible and competent” among those expected to vie for the governorship in 2027.

According to him, Zaura’s track record and popularity across Kano make him the right choice to lead the state in the next political cycle.
