Ex-Buhari's Aide, Omoworare Joins Osun Governorship Race

A former Senior Special Assistant to late former President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters, Senator Babajide Omoworare, has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the 2026 governorship election in Osun State.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain declared his ambition on Monday during a strategic meeting with the party’s leadership, led by State Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, where he also unveiled his policy manifesto.

Addressing party stakeholders at the meeting, the former lawmaker described himself as a tested political force with a track record of electoral success.

Omoworare said, “I have contested five elections and have never been defeated. Even when attempts were made to rig me out, I pursued justice through the courts and prevailed.

“By the grace of God, I am a five-star general in politics.”

He lamented what he described as a deterioration in governance and economic indicators under the current administration, citing National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) figures that place Osun State at the bottom of the food inflation index in the South-West.

The former senator also spoke about his deep political heritage, linking his aspirations to a legacy of progressive leadership.

“I am a thoroughbred progressive. My great-grandfather was an Afenifere. My maternal grandfather, the Ooni of Ife, served as the first governor of the Western Region,” he said.

“Politics runs in my veins. The PDP didn’t win Osun; the APC lost it. But we won’t lose again. I’m here to help us reset and rebuild.”

In his response, the State’s APC Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, described Omoworare as a seasoned and principled politician with deep roots in progressive ideology.

“He has been consistent in his contributions to the party and the development of our democracy. His declaration today shows the seriousness of purpose and readiness to work with stakeholders to reposition our party,” Lawal said.

The party chairman assured all aspirants of a level playing field and expressed optimism that the APC would reclaim power in the state come 2026.
