Falana Petitions Ogun CP Over Death of JAF Secretary in Hit-and-Run Crash

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has called on the Ogun State Police Command to launch a full investigation into the death of Comrade Abiodun Aremu, Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Ota, Ogun State.
In a petition dated October 15, 2025, and addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Eleweran, Abeokuta, Falana described Aremu’s death as “tragic and unacceptable,” urging the police to bring the culprit to book without delay.
Comrade Aremu was reportedly knocked down by a speeding vehicle near his residence in Ota on Sunday, October 12. The driver of the vehicle was said to have fled the scene immediately, leaving the victim critically injured.
According to Falana’s petition, Aremu was rushed to a nearby hospital by good Samaritans, but efforts by medical personnel to save his life were unsuccessful, as he was later confirmed dead.

Falana, in the letter, described the actions of the driver as both “reckless” and “negligent,” insisting that the individual must be held accountable under Nigerian law.
“We are compelled to request you to use your good offices to cause an investigation into the tragic death of Comrade Aremu with a view to fishing out the driver and prosecuting him for overspeeding, negligence, and manslaughter,” the petition read in part.
The Senior Advocate noted that the deceased was a prominent activist and a key figure in the pro-labour movement through his work with JAF, a coalition of civil society and labour organisations advocating for social justice.
Falana further pledged the cooperation of his law firm with the Ogun State Police Command to ensure a transparent investigation into the matter.
He emphasized that justice must not only be served for Aremu’s family and associates but also to deter similar incidents caused by reckless driving.
“This case should serve as a wake-up call. The roads have become a danger zone, and drivers must be held accountable for irresponsible conduct,” Falana said.
Falana concluded the petition by expressing confidence that the Ogun State Police would respond promptly and uphold justice in accordance with the rule of law.
“We trust the Command will act swiftly and ensure that those responsible are held to account in the interest of justice and public safety,” he added.
As of press time, the Ogun State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident or the petition.
