FULL LIST: FG Approves Establishment Of Nine New Private Universities In Nigeria

The Federal Government has given the green light for the establishment of nine new private universities in Nigeria, a move aimed at expanding access to higher education and boosting the country’s academic landscape.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the announcement on Wednesday during a briefing with State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

The newly approved universities include:

– Tazkiyah University (Kaduna State)

– Leadership University (Abuja)

– Jimoh Babalola University (Kwara State)

– Bridget University (Mbaise, Imo State)

– Greenland University (Jigawa State)

– JEFAP University (Niger State)

– Azione Verde University (Imo State)

– Unique Open University (Lagos State)

– American Open University (Ogun State)

Dr. Alausa revealed that the Tinubu administration inherited a backlog of 551 pending requests for the establishment of tertiary institutions. Under the new guidelines, only 79 active applications were retained after a rigorous vetting process.

He explained that many of the approved universities had been waiting for accreditation for over six years. During this time, their promoters had already invested billions of naira in constructing campuses and preparing the institutions for operation.

“Due to inefficiencies within the NUC, approvals were delayed. We have since introduced reforms to streamline these processes, and today’s approvals are a result of clearing this backlog,” Alausa said.

The minister also announced that the Federal Government has imposed a moratorium on new applications for private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, with exceptions only for those institutions that meet the newly introduced operational standards.
