ISWAP Fighters Attack Borno Base, Soldiers Feared Dead

Several soldiers were feared killed and others injured when fighters from the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a deadly assault on a military base in Ngamdu, Borno State, in the early hours of Friday.
Sources told journalists on Friday, October 10, 2025, that the insurgents stormed the camp around 2 a.m., engaging troops in heavy gunfire that lasted for several minutes.
Following the exchange of fire, the military reportedly sealed off the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, a major route linking Borno and Yobe States, leaving scores of travelers and motorists stranded for hours.
A local security source said the closure was part of precautionary measures as troops combed the area for fleeing militants and assessed the extent of the damage.
“The terrorists came around 2 a.m. and started shooting at soldiers on duty,” the source said.
“It was a coordinated attack, and there were casualties on both sides.”

Multiple reports indicate that several wounded soldiers were evacuated from the scene by military ambulances and taken to the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu for treatment.
Although the exact number of casualties had yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report, eyewitnesses described the scene as “tense,” with military helicopters seen hovering above the area after daybreak.
Security sources said reinforcements had been deployed from nearby formations to secure the Ngamdu axis, a known flashpoint along the Maiduguri-Damaturu corridor that has witnessed multiple insurgent ambushes in recent years.
The Nigerian Army has not yet issued an official statement on the incident, but defence sources said mop-up operations were ongoing to clear remaining insurgents and recover military assets.
