Kano Deputy Governor Resigns Amid Impeachment Moves
The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam, has resigned from office following mounting political pressure and impeachment moves initiated by the state legislature.
His resignation was announced on Friday in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habibu Sale Mohammed.
The development comes shortly after the Kano State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor.
Efforts by Abdussalam to halt the process through legal means also proved unsuccessful, as a Federal High Court sitting in Kano, on Wednesday, declined his application seeking to stop the impeachment.
Announcing the resignation, the Kwankwasiyya Movement said the decision was reached after careful consideration of the prevailing circumstances.
“The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public, the good people of Kano State, and the entire nation that the Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office,” the statement read.
It added that the move, though difficult, was taken in the overall interest of the state and to ensure stability in governance.
“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor. In view of this, it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve,” the statement added.
The movement was, however, quick to clarify that Abdussalam’s resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly. The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,” it stated.
The group further described the resignation as a demonstration of political maturity and statesmanship aimed at preserving peace in the state.
According to the statement, the decision was necessary to avoid deepening political tension that could disrupt governance and development in Kano State.
Following his resignation, Abdussalam is expected to channel his efforts into strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The Deputy Governor has also resolved to dedicate more time and energy to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in strengthening its structures, rebuilding strategies, and engaging in critical political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement noted.
The movement called on its supporters and residents of Kano State to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that further developments would be communicated in due course.
It also urged continued commitment to democratic values and good governance despite the unfolding political developments in the state.
