The Forum of State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from a court case seeking to stop the party’s forthcoming national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November.

The forum also announced the suspension of two members, accusing them of working against the collective interest of the party at a critical time.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the Chairman of the PDP Chairmen Forum and Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, described the court action as “unfortunate, self-serving, and capable of undermining the unity of the PDP.”

Aziegbemi specifically named Austine Nwachukwu (Imo) and Amah Abraham Nnana (Abia) as the two state chairmen behind the legal move to halt the convention.

He announced their immediate suspension from the forum, urging the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Acting National Chairman Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum to investigate and impose disciplinary sanctions on any member found complicit in the matter.

“We distance ourselves completely from the suit and the plan to use it to stop the PDP from holding its national convention. This is not right,” Aziegbemi declared.

He emphasised that the forum remains solidly united behind the Damagum-led NWC and is fully committed to ensuring that the convention holds peacefully and successfully.

“We want to state clearly that we are solidly behind the Damagum-led NWC, and we will give our full support to ensure a hitch-free convention,” he said.

The Edo PDP chairman accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to destabilise the opposition through internal infiltration and legal distractions.

“The evil plot of the APC to turn Nigeria into a one-party state will never succeed,” Aziegbemi said.

He called on all organs of the PDP to remain vigilant and resist attempts to sow discord within the party ahead of the convention, which he described as a defining moment for Nigeria’s oldest political party.

“We hope other organs of the party will draw inspiration from our decision. We must all stand firm and make the right choices,” he added.

The November national convention in Ibadan is expected to produce a new set of national officers and chart the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Insiders say the event will also serve as a litmus test for Damagum’s leadership and a platform to rebuild confidence among party members following a series of high-profile defections and internal crises.

Party loyalists have described the convention as crucial to the PDP’s recovery process after its poor showing in the 2023 general elections.
