PDP Dissolves Party Structures in Five States at Ibadan Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday dissolved all its structures in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers states as part of sweeping decisions taken at its national convention holding in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, moved the motion on the convention floor, seeking to validate congresses previously conducted across the country while simultaneously disbanding the affected state chapters.

He explained that the congresses held between 2024 and 2025 produced new officers at the ward, local government, state, and zonal levels, including national ex-officio members.

According to him, the exercises across the country were peaceful and broadly complied with the Electoral Act 2022, the PDP constitution, and internal party regulations.

“The congresses were peaceful and in alignment with the party’s guidelines. The NEC and NWC have endorsed the outcomes,” he said.

However, Makinde shocked the convention when he announced that despite the successful congresses, the PDP had resolved to dissolve its structures in the five listed states.

“In the case of Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers, the convention hereby dissolves all party structures at the ward, local government and state levels.

“The convention has authorised the publication of this decision to serve as formal notice to the public,” the governor declared.

The National Auditor and member of the National Working Committee, Daniel Okechukwu, seconded the motion, paving the way for its adoption by the convention.

The decision adds another dramatic layer to the PDP’s internal restructuring amid ongoing factional tensions, legal battles, and disputes over the legitimacy of parallel leadership groups.

As of the time of filing this report, the party has not announced transition committees or details of interim leadership arrangements for the affected states.
