PDP postpones 103rd NEC meeting amid internal developments

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its much-anticipated 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which was earlier scheduled to hold on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

The announcement was contained in a statement released on Monday by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, who explained that the decision followed an emergency meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) held in Abuja.

According to the statement, the party’s leadership opted to defer the meeting in view of “recent developments within the party,” though it did not specify the issues that prompted the decision.

“Distinguished members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) may recall that the 103rd NEC meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, 15th October, 2025,” Ologunagba said.

“However, in view of recent developments in the party, the National Working Committee (NWC), in exercise of its powers pursuant to Section 29 (2)(b) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017), has at its emergency meeting on Monday, 13th October, 2025, approved the postponement of the 103rd NEC meeting to a new date that will be communicated to members in due course.”

The spokesperson urged all NEC members to take note of the development and await further information from the national secretariat.

The NWC is expected to announce a new date for the meeting once consultations were concluded.

Though the PDP did not specify what “recent developments” necessitated the postponement, sources within the party told The PUNCH that the decision might be connected to ongoing internal consultations over recent defections and leadership realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NEC meeting was expected to deliberate on key party matters, including the performance review of state chapters, reconciliation efforts, and preparations for upcoming off-season elections.

PDP’s Recent Struggles

The party has in recent months grappled with internal power struggles and strategic disagreements that have tested its cohesion since the 2023 elections.

A number of its top members, including former national secretary Sunday Udeh Okoye and some lawmakers, have resigned in protest over what they described as poor leadership direction and factional dominance within the party.

As the PDP continues its efforts to rebuild and reposition ahead of 2027, the delay in holding its 103rd NEC meeting underscores the delicate balancing act required to keep its various blocs aligned and united.

The National Working Committee, through Ologunagba, appealed for calm among party members and assured that the postponement was a procedural step aimed at ensuring that the NEC convenes in an atmosphere of stability and consensus.

“The PDP remains committed to internal democracy, inclusivity, and transparent leadership. We urge all stakeholders to continue to support the ongoing efforts at reconciliation and restructuring within the party,” he said.
