Rema Makes History as Only African on TIME100 Next 2025 List

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation, Rema, has made history by becoming the only African artist featured on the prestigious TIME100 Next 2025 list, a global recognition of the world’s most influential rising stars.

The recognition places the 24-year-old among innovators, leaders, and artists shaping the future, further cementing his place as one of Africa’s biggest music exports.

Rema’s profile in the TIME100 Next list was written by Grammy-winning Beninese legend, Angélique Kidjo, who praised the Nigerian star’s unique artistry and his role in pushing African sound to the world.

“With the recent global explosion of African music, I needed to include some contemporary sounds. I fell in love with Rema’s Calm Down. It has a unique flow and feel, not mimicking Western pop; it is rooted in Africa but also catchy and virtuosic. I love to sing it,” Kidjo wrote.

She added: “The young Nigerian superstar has accomplished so much: Calm Down has joined the billion-stream club twice over. Rema has performed in stadiums. His latest album earned a Grammy nomination. Rema is the embodiment of the international success of Afrobeats. Thanks to artists like him, African music is at the forefront of global culture.”

Kidjo further linked Rema’s global strides to the enduring legacy of African greats like Fela Kuti, Miriam Makeba, and Youssou N’Dour, who paved the way by bringing African music to the world stage.

Her tribute positions Rema as part of a new generation of African artists carrying the torch of cultural influence and ensuring Afrobeats remains a dominant global force.
