Reps Member Dasuki Declines 2027 Re-Election Bid, Says It’s Time for Younger Nigerians
A member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, who represents Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in Sokoto State, has announced that he will not seek re-election in the 2027 general election, saying his decision was a personal sacrifice to pave the way for younger Nigerians to participate in governance.
In a statement released on Sunday, the lawmaker said the move was inspired by his conviction that democracy thrives when new ideas and fresh leadership are given space to flourish.
“The Nigeria we yearn for is only possible through sacrifice,” he said. “After due consultation with my team, our leader, my family, and my conscience, I have decided not to seek re-election to the House of Representatives in 2027.”
Dasuki clarified that his decision was not borne out of fatigue or frustration but rather a deliberate act of leadership.
“This is not born out of fatigue or disillusionment, but a higher calling, a decision rooted in belief, in hope, and in a future we all desire to see,” he explained.
Dasuki’s political career spans 14 years. He first held elective office in 2011 when he was elected into the Sokoto State House of Assembly. He later served in the State Executive Council before being elected to the National Assembly, where he currently represents his constituency.
The lawmaker also chairs the Future Is Now Project, a youth-focused political inclusion initiative launched in October 2025, which advocates for 70 per cent representation of Nigerians under 40 in the House of Representatives by 2027.
Explaining the motivation behind his decision, Dasuki said it was important to lead by example, particularly since he had publicly championed the inclusion of young Nigerians in leadership.
“I am still a youth by all standards, but I have crossed the 40-year threshold we proposed,” he said. “If we are to give meaning to our words, we must be willing to pay a heavy price. This, my dear constituents, is that sacrifice. And so I choose to make space for the vision we proclaimed.”
Reflecting on his journey, the Sokoto lawmaker expressed gratitude to his constituents and political mentor, former Governor and current Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, for their trust, guidance, and support over the years.
“To my constituents, you gave me your trust, and I carried it like a badge of honour. To our youth, I say: no more waiting, no more excuses, no more silence. Take your place. Stand tall. Lead with courage, integrity, and vision,” he declared.
Despite stepping aside from elective politics, Dasuki said he would remain active in public service through mentorship, advocacy, and policy development targeted at youth empowerment and democratic reform.
“As I step aside, I wish to bequeath a new legacy in Nigeria’s political history, one that showcases leaders who know when to exit, paving the way for a fresher generation,” he said.
He reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening democratic institutions and nurturing emerging leaders who would redefine governance in the years ahead.
Under the Future Is Now Project, Dasuki has been at the forefront of campaigns encouraging young Nigerians to contest elective offices, build leadership capacity, and influence national policy.
Political observers say his latest decision reinforces his long-standing advocacy for generational renewal in Nigerian politics, a message that has resonated widely among youth groups and civil society organizations.
