Reps To Probe Alleged Technical Error In 2025 UTME

On Thursday, the House of Representatives decided to conduct an investigation into the technical malfunction that resulted in the widespread failure of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
This decision was made following the approval of a motion of urgent public significance put forth by Rep. Adewale Adebayo from Osun State.
JAMB disclosed the results of the candidates who participated in the 2025 UTME on May 9, which indicated an alarmingly high failure rate, with over 78% of candidates scoring below 200 points out of a possible 400.
An initial review by JAMB revealed a significant technical error. During a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB Registrar, reported that the results of 379,997 candidates were impacted due to server complications.
The registrar elaborated that defective server updates in JAMB’s Lagos and South-East regions hindered the upload of candidates’ responses during the first three days of the examination.
He noted that the error stemmed from one of the board’s two technical service providers and went unnoticed prior to the initial results release. To rectify the issue, Oloyede announced that all affected candidates would have the chance to retake the examination from May 16 to May 19, 2025.
During the plenary session on Wednesday, May 15, Adebayo highlighted that numerous candidates and their families faced lengthy journeys to examination centers, only to encounter unforeseen failures.

He urged for an inquiry into the technical shortcomings to avert similar incidents in the future. Sada Soli, a lawmaker from Katsina, supported the motion, praising the JAMB Registrar for his openness in acknowledging the mistake and expressing regret to the Nigerian populace.
He also recognized Oloyede’s contributions to enhancing the board’s revenue since his tenure began. However, Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House, remarked that the committee responsible for the investigation would determine whether to formally commend the JAMB Registrar for his conduct.
The motion received unanimous approval through a voice vote. Additionally, the House called on the Federal Government to: Establish Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers in every Local Government Area (LGA) nationwide to facilitate access to examination centers. Direct JAMB to release the results of candidates under the age of 16, which had previously been withheld.
