Taraba Gov Suspends Planned Move to APC Over Kebbi School Attack

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has suspended his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State.

It could be recalled that armed men stormed the school on Sunday night, whisking away the students and killing the Vice Principal, Hassan Makuku, who reportedly attempted to protect the girls.

In a statement personally signed on Tuesday, Kefas said it would be insensitive to proceed with political events at a time when the nation is mourning yet another security tragedy.

He described the abduction as “deeply troubling” and emphasised that compassion must come before politics.

“My heart is with the families of the abducted children,” he said, expressing solidarity with the government and people of Kebbi State. “The safety of children must remain a national priority.”

Kefas explained that as a leader and a father, he felt obligated to place national concern over partisan considerations.

“As a father, as a leader, and as a governor whose administration has prioritised security and education, it is morally right and nationally responsible to suspend all major political events until the situation receives the urgent attention it deserves,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to prioritise reflection, unity and prayer rather than celebration or political mobilisation at this critical moment.

Kefas urged security agencies to intensify rescue operations to ensure the safe return of the abducted schoolgirls. He appealed to Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant and prayerful as authorities work to restore peace.

He added that a new date for his formal move to the APC would be announced after consultations and when “morally appropriate.”

It was reported earlier that the APC National Working Committee had scheduled Wednesday to formally welcome the Taraba governor into the ruling party.

APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, confirmed preparations for the event, saying: “The entire National Working Committee members of the APC will receive Governor Kefas on November 19. We are prepared for the event.”

Kefas is one of the last remaining PDP governors and has been in the news for nearly five months over speculations about his defection.

If he proceeds, he will become the fourth PDP governor to switch parties within the year.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori defected on April 23, 2025; Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno followed on June 6, 2025; while Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri moved to the APC on November 3, 2025.

Kefas prayed for peace across the country and the protection of all Nigerian children, insisting that national tragedies must always take precedence over political ambitions.
