Tears in National Assembly as Enugu Senator Okey Ezea Slumps, Dies
The Senate was thrown into mourning on Wednesday following the sudden death of Senator Okey Ezea, the only Labour Party senator from Enugu State and one of the party’s few remaining lawmakers in the upper chamber.
Ezea, who was elected in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party, had stayed in the party even as several colleagues defected.
News of his passing spread through the National Assembly early Wednesday, plunging the chambers into a sombre mood.
Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, expressed deep grief over the loss, describing Ezea’s death as “profoundly shocking and deeply sorrowful.”
Kalu said the late senator was “more than a colleague” but a close companion who embodied humility and sincerity.
“Our friendship was built on mutual respect and brotherhood,” he said.
He recalled their shared Catholic faith, noting that several of their personal and spiritual moments strengthened their bond.
Kalu extended condolences to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, the people of Nsukka Zone, and Ezea’s family.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central also penned an emotional tribute, describing Ezea as a “wise and gentle” colleague whose presence brought calm during turbulent moments.
“You offered me encouragement during my darkest periods. Your prayers kept me going, and I will miss you dearly in the chambers,” she wrote.
Akpoti-Uduaghan said her constituents join the people of Enugu North in grieving the late lawmaker.
Ezea’s death marks the second time in less than two years that the South-East has lost a sitting senator.
In July 2024, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South, died in London at the age of 52. His death, like Ezea’s, sent shockwaves through the region and the National Assembly.
The Senate is expected to formally announce Ezea’s passing at plenary and observe a moment of silence in his honour.
