‘The Eagle Never Bows Its Head’ - Peter Obi Reacts As Nigeria Exits 2026 World Cup

Former Governor of Anambra State and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the Super Eagles to remain resilient following their defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sunday’s World Cup qualifying playoff final in Morocco.

Nigeria exited the qualification race after losing on penalties, a result that has sparked widespread disappointment among fans across the country.

In a post via his official 𝕏 handle on Monday, November 17, Obi acknowledged the emotional weight of the loss but urged the team not to lose confidence.

“Our dear Super Eagles, I know how deeply yesterday’s outcome weighs on each of you. When you wear the green and white, you carry the heartbeat of the whole nation, and I acknowledge the hard work, sacrifice, and commitment you put into every match,” he wrote.

He encouraged the players to rise above the setback. The former Governor said: “But let this moment not break your spirit. Great teams are defined by their response to adversity… Do not let today overshadow the greatness of tomorrow. The Eagle never bows its head, it lifts its wings.”

Obi charged the team to rebuild with greater determination. He said the Eagles must “regroup and rebuild with even greater discipline, focus, and preparedness,” assuring them that “Nigeria believes in you, and together, we will soar again.”

Sunday’s elimination marks the second consecutive World Cup Nigeria will miss since making its debut appearance at the global tournament in 1994.

The Super Eagles had taken an early lead in the third minute with a deflected strike from Frank Onyeka before Meschak Elia equalised for DR Congo later in the first half.

The match eventually went to penalties, where the Eagles fell short, ending their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
