Tight Security: NASS Restricts Movement Around Akpabio’s Office

The National Assembly (NASS) has introduced new security measures restricting movement around the office of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The directive, contained in a memo dated October 2 and signed by the Sergeant-at-Arms, Etido Ekpo, was circulated ahead of the resumption of plenary scheduled for October 7.
According to Ekpo, the corridor linking the White House lobby to the Senate President’s office will henceforth be reserved exclusively for senators and members of the House of Representatives.
The new arrangement means that aides and personal assistants will no longer be permitted access to the passage.
“You are kindly requested to disseminate this information to distinguished senators who would in turn intimate their aides or personal assistants as appropriate,” the memo read.

Ekpo, a retired brigadier-general, explained that the restrictions were introduced to create a more secure and safe environment for legislative business.
He stressed that the adjustment was necessary to reduce congestion and enhance orderliness within the immediate vicinity of the Senate President’s office.
The National Assembly is expected to resume plenary on October 7, after a recess of more than two months. The new restrictions are expected to be enforced as soon as lawmakers return.
