WAEC Debunks Subject Restriction Rumour

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports suggesting that senior secondary students had been directed to take specific subjects in the forthcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates (WASSCE).

In a statement on Tuesday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Moyosola Adeshina, described the reports as baseless and misleading.

“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” she said.

WAEC clarified that it has no authority to determine or alter school curricula in Nigeria, stressing that such responsibility lies solely with the Federal Government.

“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government. WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” Adeshina explained.

She emphasised that WAEC’s role is limited to implementing government-approved policies through credible assessment processes.

Reiterating its commitment to professionalism, WAEC assured candidates, schools, and other stakeholders that the 2026 WASSCE would be conducted fairly and transparently.

“All candidates taking part in the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates will be given a fair and equal opportunity in the assessment process,” the statement read.

The Council advised students, schools, and the public to disregard the misleading claims and rely solely on official communications from WAEC for information relating to the conduct of its examinations.

“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” Adeshina added.
