Yemi Alade Opens Up on Lying About Her Age, Says It Led to Depression

Nigerian Afrobeat sensation, Yemi Alade, has revealed how lying about her age for several years once threw her into a period of depression and self-doubt.

The award-winning singer made the disclosure in a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where she reflected on the emotional toll that self-deception took on her mental health.

I Said I Was 22 for Three Years‘ – Alade

Recounting the experience, the Johnny crooner said she had spent three years telling people she was 22, only to later realise she was actually 25.

“There was a time someone asked me how old I was, and for about three years I kept saying 22,” she said.

“Then one day I calculated it and realised I was already 25. I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t process it. It was mental—for three years I didn’t know my age.”

According to her, the realisation left her momentarily shaken as she struggled to reconcile with her true age.

It Affected My Mental Health

Yemi admitted that the discovery triggered a short period of depression, noting how self-denial and societal pressure can influence one’s perception of self-worth and identity.

“It really affected me mentally. I didn’t know how I had convinced myself for so long, but it taught me how powerful the mind can be, for good or bad,” she shared.

Lesson in Self-Acceptance

The Knack Am hitmaker explained that the experience became a turning point, teaching her the importance of self-acceptance and authenticity.

“That phase of my life showed me how easily people can lose touch with reality when they try to live up to others’ expectations. It was tough, but it helped me appreciate honesty and growth,” she added.

Yemi Alade, one of Nigeria’s most successful female Afrobeat artists, rose to global fame with her hit single Johnny in 2014.

Known for her vibrant performances and advocacy for African culture, she has continued to inspire fans with her openness about personal struggles and self-discovery.
