President Tinubu Suspends This Week's FEC Meeting, Hosts Security Chiefs Monday

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting originally scheduled for this week Monday (today), has been postponed to a date that has not yet been made public.

Journalists present in the Council Chamber at the scheduled time noted that while a few ministers were already seated, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Vice, Sen. Kashim Shettima; Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, had not yet arrived.

Around 12:15 pm, several ministers began to gather their documents and make their way towards the exit.

One minister, who requested to remain anonymous while speaking to The PUNCH, indicated that the meeting originally planned for Monday has been rescheduled for a date that will be announced in the near future.

“It is no longer holding today. But you know, the council meets on Mondays only when there are issues to discuss,” the minister said.

However, the cabinet member declined to give reasons for the postponement.

Despite this, sources from the Presidency who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity revealed that the initial announcement of the meeting was circulated on Sunday evening, only to be delayed shortly before noon.

Nevertheless, a few ministers were not informed of the postponement in a timely manner.

“The ministers were not even supposed to come here because the meeting has been postponed. But it appears they got the notice very late.

“The meeting itself was impromptu because the notice came out last night,” said one source who asked to remain anonymous.

Another source who works closely with the President told journalists that Mr President is scheduled to meet with Service Chiefs at 2:00 pm to discuss the nationwide protests, among other matters.

“Yes, FEC was postponed, but there will be a security meeting at 2:00 pm,” the source said, glancing at a wristwatch.

Reports suggest that Nigerians, predominantly young individuals, are reassembling throughout the nation for the fifth consecutive day of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria demonstrations.

On Sunday, President Tinubu urged for dialogue and an immediate cessation of the nationwide protests that have been ongoing since Thursday.

He stated that his administration is prepared to listen to and respond to the concerns raised by the protesters, emphasizing that he has received their messages “loud and clear.”

Nevertheless, demonstrators have persisted in their protests across key cities, including Lagos, Abuja, and Kaduna.
