‘I Have No History Of Rigging, Electoral Violence’ – Peter Obi Reaffirms One-Term Presidency Plan

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reiterated his intention to serve only one term if elected President of Nigeria, insisting that meaningful change can be achieved within four years.
Peter Obi stated this on Tuesday while reacting to criticisms trailing his declaration to govern for a single term, expressing surprise that such a stance has generated widespread debate.
In a statement, Obi said doubts surrounding his promise reflected a belief that a sincere leader cannot deliver significant progress in 48 months.
“I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter,” Obi said.
“What drives me is not personal ambition, but a deep commitment to see Nigeria work. And if the sacrifice required of me is four years of sincere, accountable leadership, so be it.”
He stressed that leadership should be defined by service rather than entitlement, promising to dedicate every moment of his tenure to building a functional Nigeria.
The former governor dismissed insinuations about his political style, maintaining that he has no record of electoral malpractice or violent tactics.

“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice.
“I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name. I have always chosen the path of peace, principle, and civility,” he stated.
Peter Obi added that he has never denied opponents their rights or pressured them into breaking the bank for campaign advertisements, advocating fair competition over manufactured victories.
Obi outlined key priorities of his proposed one-term administration, promising to tackle corruption and redirect public funds to critical sectors.
“In four years, we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas. For instance, the trillions used to acquire new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenses at this time could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure,” he said.
He also pledged to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions: “Within the same period, we ensure that the rule is sacrosanct and the rule of law is strictly followed. Within the same period, we can conduct free, fair and credible elections.”
Peter Obi’s reaffirmation of his single-term presidency agenda has stirred fresh discussions about governance timelines and accountability, with supporters praising the move as selfless and critics questioning its feasibility.
