The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday, formally swore in Joseph Ikpea and Emmanuel Nwachukwu as newly elected senators representing Edo Central and Anambra South senatorial districts, respectively.

The ceremony, which took place at 11:51 a.m. during plenary, officially filled the two previously vacant seats in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

The Acting Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, administered the oaths of office and allegiance to both lawmakers.

Ikpea, who contested under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emerged winner of the Edo Central senatorial by-election, while Nwachukwu, representing the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), clinched victory in the Anambra South contest.

The Edo Central seat became vacant following the resignation of Monday Okpebholo, who left to contest and later emerged as Governor of Edo State, while the Anambra South seat was declared vacant after the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in July 2024.

Their swearing-in restores the Senate to its full complement of 109 members.

In his remarks, Senate President Akpabio congratulated the new senators, describing their election as a “solemn call to serve the nation” and urging them to rise above party politics in the discharge of their legislative responsibilities.

“Today, you have been called to national duty,” Akpabio said. “You are no longer senators of your political parties; you are senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He reminded them that public service demands dedication, unity, and fairness, regardless of political affiliations.

“Your colleagues who have been here will continue to assist you, so you will get used to the nuances of lawmaking,” he added. “Congratulations again, and once again, welcome.”

Following the swearing-in, both lawmakers took their seats in the red chamber and joined their colleagues as plenary resumed.

The Senate then proceeded to deliberate on scheduled matters for the day, marking the official start of Ikpea and Nwachukwu’s legislative journey in the 10th National Assembly.
