New PDP Factional Chairman, Abdulrahman Vows to Rebuild Party Before 2027 Elections

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mohammed Abdulrahman, has promised to reposition the opposition party, reconcile aggrieved members, and restore internal democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Monday at the party’s mini office in Wuse District, Abuja, Abdulrahman unveiled his leadership agenda tagged “A New Dawn,” pledging to heal divisions and return the PDP to its founding principles of inclusivity, accountability, and service.

“We are all aware of the current pitiable state of our glorious party because of the actions and inactions of our leaders and members,” he said.
“From being the ruling party for 16 uninterrupted years to being an opposition party for over 10 years now; from being a formidable opposition to a now humbled opposition owing to the unexplainable defections of governors, legislators, and council chairmen.”

The former National Vice Chairman (North Central) assumed leadership of the PDP on Saturday following the suspension of National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, by the National Working Committee (NWC) over alleged misconduct.

However, in a swift reaction, Anyanwu’s loyalists convened their own meeting where Abdulrahman was declared Acting National Chairman, deepening the leadership crisis within the party.

Despite the controversy, Abdulrahman said his emergence signified a new opportunity for renewal.

“I have accepted to become Acting National Chairman at this difficult time through the mercy of God and the instrumentality of very critical stakeholders of this party,” he declared.
“My job here as Acting National Chairman is to heal the party of its wounds and end factionalisation.”

Outlining his immediate priorities, Abdulrahman promised to reposition the PDP, restore internal democracy, and organise an all-inclusive national convention to elect a legitimate and unified National Working Committee.

“We will conclude all outstanding congresses at the zonal, state, local government, and ward levels. After that, we will hand over to a properly elected National Working Committee,” he said.

He stressed that the PDP must return to its founding ideals and reconnect with the people it was created to serve.

“We will hand over our beloved party back to her true owners — the Nigerian people,” he said.
“I want to assure all PDP faithful, critical stakeholders, and Nigerians at large that a new dawn has come, and with it, the renaissance of the PDP.”

The acting chairman urged all party members and leaders to put aside their differences and work together for the survival of the PDP, warning that disunity would only weaken the party’s electoral chances.

“I cannot do this seemingly difficult job alone. I will need all your support, prayers, and genuine commitment to join hands in lifting our party upwards,” he appealed.

He revealed that consultations with key stakeholders were already underway and that the National Executive Committee (NEC) would soon be convened to chart a unified course for the party’s future.

The leadership tussle within the PDP has further divided the party following the recent suspensions and counter-announcements involving loyalists of Umar Damagum, Samuel Anyanwu, and Nyesom Wike.

While Abdulrahman insists his appointment is legitimate, the Damagum-led NWC continues to claim full authority, creating parallel power structures within the opposition party.

Political observers say the outcome of the crisis will determine whether the PDP can regain stability and effectively position itself as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) before the 2027 elections.

With Abdulrahman’s emergence and the unveiling of his “A New Dawn” agenda, the PDP now faces a defining moment — one that could either reunite the fractured opposition or deepen internal divisions as the race toward 2027 gathers momentum.
