Nigeria Tops Africa’s Oil Production Chart - See Other Big Five Producers

Nigeria has maintained its position as Africa’s largest crude oil producer, recording an average of 1.549 million barrels per day (bpd), according to new production figures released for 2025.

Despite persistent challenges such as oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and aging infrastructure, Nigeria continues to anchor its economy on petroleum exports while introducing reforms aimed at attracting more investment into the energy sector.

Industry experts say recent efforts by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and renewed collaboration with security agencies have helped stabilise production levels.

Libya follows closely with 1.299 million barrels daily

Libya ranks second on the continent with a production capacity of 1.299 million barrels per day. The country’s oil industry, managed by the National Oil Corporation (NOC), remains the backbone of its economy despite years of political instability and intermittent shutdowns.

Authorities in Tripoli have continued efforts to sustain and expand production capacity, with the NOC prioritising investment in field maintenance and export infrastructure.

Angola holds third position with 1.03 million barrels

Angola comes third on the list, producing 1.03 million barrels per day. The southern African country is leveraging new deepwater projects and modern drilling technologies to maintain output amid declining mature fields.

Analysts note that Angola’s focus on diversifying its exploration base and enhancing fiscal incentives has made it one of the most attractive oil investment destinations in sub-Saharan Africa.

Algeria maintains steady output at 940,000 barrels

Algeria ranks fourth, sustaining crude production at around 940,000 barrels per day. The country’s hydrocarbon industry remains central to its economy, supported by state-owned energy giant Sonatrach.

Recent gas export deals with Europe and new exploration projects are expected to boost foreign exchange earnings and solidify Algeria’s position as a key North African energy player.

Egypt rounds out the top five with 507,000 barrels daily

Egypt completes the top five list with an output of 507,000 barrels per day. The North African nation has made significant progress in offshore exploration and gas field development, bolstering its ambition to become a regional energy hub.

Cairo’s partnerships with international oil companies and its investment in liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities continue to strengthen its position within Africa’s energy landscape.

Africa’s oil future: balancing output and sustainability

Africa’s top oil producers collectively contribute a vital share of the continent’s revenue and global energy supply. However, experts warn that long-term stability will depend on balancing output with environmental sustainability and economic diversification.

With growing global interest in clean energy transitions, countries like Nigeria, Angola, and Egypt are already exploring opportunities in gas monetisation, renewable energy partnerships, and carbon credit markets to future-proof their economies.
