Kano Rep Jibrin Defects to APC, Endorses Tinubu for 2027

The member representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, has formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), two months after he was expelled from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) over alleged anti-party activities and failure to pay membership dues.

The lawmaker had remained silent about his next political step, though his longstanding closeness to President Bola Tinubu had sparked speculation of a return to the ruling party.

Announcing his defection on Monday via his verified social media pages, Jibrin said his supporters had unanimously resolved to dump the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement while pledging full support for President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

“Today, in a show of solidarity, I was warmly received by thousands of my constituents in my hometown of Kofa, Bebeji, Kano. The gathering resolved to leave the NNPP/Kwankwasiyya, join the APC, and endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office,” he wrote.

Jibrin disclosed that about 2,000 Islamic scholars from the constituency offered special prayers for President Tinubu, as well as for peace and development in Kiru/Bebeji, Kano State and Nigeria.

Addressing constituents in a video shared from the rally, the fourth-term lawmaker said he joined the APC with his supporters to avoid the criticism that trailed his earlier solo defection.

“I decided to bring this crowd to correct my earlier mistake. I don’t want anyone to say I don’t have supporters,” he told the cheering crowd.

The event drew a large turnout of political supporters and community leaders, further signalling shifting alliances within Kano’s political landscape as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
