Tinubu Jets to South Africa, Angola for G20 and AU–EU Summits
President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday depart Abuja for Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, to attend two major international meetings, the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit and the 7th African Union–European Union Summit.
This was announced in a statement released on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga explained that Tinubu’s first engagement will be in Johannesburg, where he is expected to participate in the 20th summit of the G20 Leaders.
He added that the President will thereafter proceed to Luanda to join heads of state and government for the AU–EU Summit.
He said President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently holds the G20 Presidency, extended the invitation to Tinubu. He noted that Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, had also invited Tinubu to participate in the summit during his own tenure in 2024.
The G20 Summit, scheduled for November 22 and 23 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, will bring together leaders of the world’s largest economies alongside representatives of the European Union, African Union and major financial institutions.
Discussions at the summit will revolve around the theme, “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” which will guide deliberations on inclusive growth, global trade, financing for development, debt management, climate change, energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, decent work and the fast-growing field of artificial intelligence.
Onanuga said President Tinubu will also hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, aimed at advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda and deepening cooperation on regional peace, security and economic development.
Following the conclusion of the G20 Summit, Tinubu will travel to Luanda for the 7th AU–EU Summit holding on November 24 and 25. According to the statement, the meeting will bring together African and European heads of state, young leaders, innovators and civil society organisations to discuss shared challenges and propose solutions to issues such as climate change, inclusive development, digital transformation, infrastructure, manufacturing, creative industries and agribusiness.
Tinubu will be accompanied by several senior officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake; the Minister of Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
The statement concluded that President Tinubu will return to Nigeria at the end of the two meetings.
