One Killed As Gunmen Attack Ex-Gov Chris Ngige’s Convoy In Anambra
Federal Minister of Labour and Employment of Nigeria, Chris Ngige, escaped harm after gunmen ambushed his convoy on the Nkpor-Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday, November 27.
The attack occurred along the Nkpor-Nnobi Road, triggering panic among residents and commuters.
A statement from Ngige’s former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, confirmed that the former governor was not inside the convoy when the shooting erupted.
Chukwuelobe disclosed that the attackers, suspected to be assassins or armed hoodlums, were disguised in police and military uniforms, including those of the Nigerian Army.
One policeman riding in the pilot vehicle was reportedly shot by the assailants, who later seized his rifle, uniform, and duty gun.
The vehicle was riddled with bullets, confirming the heavy exchange of fire that rocked the axis.
During the chaos, tragedy struck when a woman filming the violent scene on her mobile phone was reportedly gunned down by the attackers.
She was reportedly hit in the chest and neck, dying instantly at the spot while still clutching her phone.
Chukwuelobe said that Ngige personally mourned the slain woman and offered condolences to her family.
“He also… extended condolences to the family of the woman who was killed while recording the attack,” he said.
A shop owner who rushed to the scene, curious about the sudden gunfire, was also shot. He reportedly lost massive blood but is awaiting surgery to extract lodged bullets.
According to Chukwuelobe, he was said to be lucky none hit his spine or spine cord, excluding paralysis fears.
The escort team leader, who was wounded, has already undergone surgery and is said to be recovering.
It was, however, confirmed that no policeman was killed in the attack.
After speaking with Ngige, Chukwuelobe confirmed the ex-governor condemned the attack but stressed ongoing emergency medical care for injured persons.
He said: “I spoke with His Excellency, Chris Ngige, who confirmed the attack and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure adequate medical care for the injured.”
Ngige also mourned the woman killed while filming the carnage. He said, “He also… extended condolences to the family of the woman who was killed while recording the attack.”
However, the Anambra State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the reckless ambush as of the time of filing this report.
