INEC Unveils Fresh Electoral Guidelines Ahead Of 2027 Polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday convened a high-level meeting with leaders of political parties at its headquarters in Abuja to unveil and deliberate on new electoral guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting brought together party chairmen, secretaries, and key representatives across the political spectrum, underscoring early preparations by the electoral umpire to streamline processes before the next nationwide polls.
Among those in attendance were Senator Nenadi Usman, who represented the Labour Party, as well as Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu, who attended on behalf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The commission disclosed that the meeting was primarily focused on presenting and reviewing newly drafted electoral guidelines that will govern the conduct of the 2027 elections.
According to INEC, the development follows the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which has necessitated a comprehensive review of existing electoral procedures.
INEC Chairman stated that the updated guidelines are fully aligned with provisions of the new law, stressing that political actors must adjust to the evolving electoral framework.
He noted that stakeholders “can no longer operate within the evolving electoral framework using outdated regulations,” signalling a shift towards stricter compliance and modernization of election processes.
As part of its broader preparation, INEC also outlined timelines for the Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
The commission said online pre-registration would commence on August 18, 2025, while physical, in-person registration is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2025.
The exercise, according to INEC, will allow eligible Nigerians to either register afresh or update their voter details ahead of the polls.
In addition, the electoral body announced plans for a nationwide voter register revalidation exercise aimed at sanitising the database by removing duplicate entries and names of deceased persons, a move expected to boost the credibility of the electoral roll.
Despite the ongoing reforms, debates surrounding electoral transparency remain unresolved.
Key among them is the controversy over provisions in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, particularly the stance of the Senate on real-time electronic transmission of election results to INEC’s Result Viewing Portal.
Meanwhile, political activities are already gaining traction ahead of the 2027 elections.
President Bola Tinubu has secured endorsement from the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a second term in office.
On the opposition front, key figures including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi are said to be exploring a coalition platform under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge the ruling party.
The latest moves by INEC signal an early start to preparations for the 2027 elections, with stakeholders expected to engage further on the proposed guidelines in the coming months.
