INEC clears eight groups in fresh political party registration process

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an adjustment to the campaign timeline for the forthcoming Osun State governorship election following a change in the election date.

The development comes after the electoral body earlier moved the poll by one week, prompting a corresponding review of key activities in the election timetable.

INEC had, on February 26, 2026, issued a revised timetable for the 2027 general election, shifting the Osun governorship poll from August 8 to August 15, 2026.

The commission said the adjustment necessitated changes to the campaign schedule for political parties participating in the election.

In a statement, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, disclosed that the campaign deadline has now been fixed in line with electoral laws.

He said, “As a result of this adjustment, the last day for political parties’ campaigns in the state is now midnight on Thursday, August 13, 2026, in line with Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which provides that campaigns shall end 24 hours prior to election day.”

The commission called on all stakeholders, including political parties and candidates, to strictly adhere to the revised timetable.

“The Commission urges all political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the revised timeline,” Haruna stated.

INEC also reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible electoral process in Osun State.

“INEC remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible and inclusive elections,” the statement added.
