The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following reports that popular Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, has died at the age of 40.

According to reports, the actor passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, after allegedly suffering complications from an illness at a hospital in Lagos State.

TVC was also reported to have confirmed the actor’s demise.

Sources close to the family claimed that the movie star had been battling kidney cancer for some time and was reportedly placed on life support before his death.

Family members, friends, colleagues, and fans are said to be devastated by the tragic development.

Ekubo was widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most versatile and bankable actors, known for his roles in romantic comedies, dramas, and blockbuster productions.

He gained national attention after emerging first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest before making his breakthrough in the Nollywood hit movie Weekend Getaway.

Over the years, the actor featured in several successful films and television productions, earning admiration for his charisma, acting range, and screen presence.

In 2020, he was recognised by the United Nations as one of the “Most Influential People of African Descent under 40” for his contributions to entertainment and social development across Africa.

The news of his reported death comes months after concerns emerged over his prolonged absence from social media and public events.

Recall that fellow Nollywood actor Ikechukwu Ogbonna, popularly known as IK Ogbonna, had recently addressed speculations surrounding Ekubo’s health and wellbeing.

In a video shared online, IK was seen alongside Alex during a family gathering and reassured fans that the actor was healthy.

According to him, Ekubo had attended his sister’s wedding and appeared fine.

He explained that the actor had merely chosen to step away from social media and public life for personal reasons.

IK said the decision was part of an effort by Ekubo to focus on himself and take a break from the pressures associated with constant public attention.

Following reports of his passing, tributes have continued to pour in across social media, with fans and colleagues describing the late actor as talented, humble, and dedicated to his craft.

Many also recalled his impact on modern Nollywood and his role in promoting African entertainment globally.
