The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, ordered the remand of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, in Kuje prison.

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar gave the order in a short ruling, directing that Sowore be kept in custody pending the hearing and determination of his application for a stay of the order revoking his bail and issuing a bench warrant against him.

The judge adjourned the matter till June 24 for the hearing of the application for stay.

Justice Umar also dismissed an earlier application filed by Sowore seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on the grounds of alleged bias.

The court held that the matter would proceed before the same judge.

Sowore’s motion for stay was filed by his new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN.

Sowore arrived at the court in the company of members of his group, some of whom carried placards.

His appearance followed an earlier ruling by the court on June 16, when Justice Umar revoked the bail earlier granted to him over his failure to appear for trial.

In the same ruling, the judge also issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest following an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services, Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu.

The charge is linked to a post allegedly made by Sowore on his X and Facebook accounts, where he reportedly referred to the President as “a criminal”.

The matter has now been fixed for June 24, when the court will hear the application seeking to stay the revocation of his bail and the bench warrant issued against him.
