‘Contribute ₦1,000 Each’ – NDC Seeks Donations From Nigerians To Fund 2027 Campaign

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it wants ordinary Nigerians to play a direct role in funding its 2027 election campaign by contributing as little as ₦1,000 to the party.

The party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, disclosed this during an appearance on Arise News’ Prime Time on Wednesday.

Dickson, a former Bayelsa State governor, said the plan was designed to reduce the influence of wealthy individuals and political financiers who, he alleged, use their money to gain undue influence over the country’s political process.

He said the NDC would encourage Nigerians to make small donations of ₦1,000, ₦2,000 and other affordable amounts to support the party’s activities.

Dickson described the NDC as the only political party in the country that was not funded through the government treasury.

“You cannot allow your democracy to be funded by moneybags and billionaires who are now trillionaires using government resources. You will continue to be oppressed,” he said.

According to him, allowing ordinary citizens to fund the party would give them a greater stake in the political process and help reduce the control of wealthy individuals over democracy.

“So, we have got to help Nigerian poor people, oppressed people, break loose from the oppressors. We want a process by which Nigerians, ordinary Nigerians, can contribute N1,000, N2,000, as it happens all over the world,” Dickson said.

Dickson also disclosed that the party was still consulting on the composition of its presidential campaign council for the 2027 election.

He said the names would be made public after the consultations had been completed.

The NDC leader explained that the party was taking its time to avoid announcing a list that could later be withdrawn.

“We don’t want to do what the other party in government has done, publishing something and withdrawing it,” he said.

Dickson also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other institutions involved in the electoral process to ensure that the 2027 election was free, fair and credible.

He said the NDC would take its campaign directly to Nigerians and fight for every vote.

“We will take our case to the Nigerian people, and every vote will be fought for. Every vote will be contested,” he said.

Dickson’s comments came a day after the NDC rejected allegations of illegal payments connected to its candidate selection process.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, had accused unnamed “disgruntled elements” of spreading what he described as deliberate misinformation and propaganda about the party’s candidate selection and funding arrangements.

Director also denied allegations that Dickson demanded or collected money from aspirants during the process.
