Court Reinstates Beke As Chairman Of Rivers APC
The Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has nullified the appointment of the seven-member Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, under the leadership of Chief Tony Okocha, which was appointed by the National Working Committee of the nation’s ruling party.
In a ruling dated Monday, Justice Sika Aprioku, in response to a lawsuit filed by Sam Sam Etetegwung, Banarth Ezemoye, Ezekiel Ubom, and others on behalf of the democratically elected APC executive in the state, reinstated the executive led by Emeka Beke as the legitimate leadership of the party in Rivers State.
The court issued a perpetual injunction against the committee led by Okocha, prohibiting them from interfering with the Beke-led executive until the conclusion of their four-year term.
Furthermore, the court restrained the APC’s national leadership from recognizing the committee led by Okocha, directing them to acknowledge the Beke-led executive as the party’s authentic leadership until the conclusion of their term.
The court also criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its support of the dissolution of the democratically elected APC executives and cautioned political party leaders to adhere to their constitutions and to act with caution.
Justice Aprioku determined that the actions of the APC National Working Committee were in violation of both the party’s and Nigeria’s constitutions.
As a consequence, the court awarded N300,000 in costs in favor of the APC executive led by Beke.
