NAFDAC Bans Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap In Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a recall for Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap, 100g, identified by batch number 81832M 08, which was manufactured in Germany.

In a statement released on its official website, NAFDAC revealed that the soap contains a hazardous chemical impurity known as Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), or Lilial, which is prohibited in cosmetic products due to its associated health risks.

The agency further clarified that this chemical, often present in fragrances, has been associated with reproductive harm, posing risks to unborn children, and may also lead to skin sensitization, resulting in allergic reactions.

“The presence of Butylphenyl Methylpropional in the product violates the Cosmetic Products Regulation, as it poses serious health concerns, BMHCA is prohibited in cosmetic products due to its potential to cause reproductive harm and skin sensitisation. It has been banned in several countries, including across the EU,” the NAFDAC.

NAFDAC has also indicated that this specific batch of Dove soap, along with several other Dove cosmetic items, including Derma Spa Goodness and Men Care, has been recalled or prohibited in multiple countries for similar reasons.
