NJC Suspends Rivers, Anambra High Court Judges
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has decided to suspend Justice G. C. Aguma from the High Court of Rivers State and Justice A.O. Nwabunike from the Anambra State High Court from carrying out their judicial duties.
Both justices will face a one-year suspension without pay and will be monitored for an additional two years following their suspension.
This resolution was reached during the 107th Meeting of the NJC, presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on November 13 and 14, 2024.
In total, five serving judicial officers received sanctions for various forms of misconduct.
Additionally, the Council has recommended the compulsory retirement of two Heads of Court due to age falsification.
The Chief Judge of Imo State, Hon. Justice T. E. Chukwuemeka Chikeka, and the Grand Kadi of Yobe State, Hon. Kadi Babagana Mahdi, have both been recommended for retirement for this reason.
The Council also reviewed the findings of its Preliminary Complaints Assessment Committee, which examined 30 petitions and established six committees for further investigation. Of these, 22 petitions were dismissed for lack of merit, while two were deemed sub judice.
