A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has declared his intention to contest the Bauchi State governorship election in 2027 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Tuggar made the declaration while addressing a large crowd of supporters at the Games Village in Bauchi, the state capital, where he emphasised the urgent need for quality leadership to drive social and economic development.

Speaking at the event, the former minister warned that ineffective leadership had continued to stall development across the state, affecting families and communities.

He said his past political experiences, including electoral setbacks, had strengthened his determination to serve the people with dedication.

“I understand the pain of electoral defeat and the expectations of the people. These experiences have strengthened my resolve to serve with commitment and integrity,” he said.

Tuggar disclosed that he had complied with directives requiring political appointees seeking elective positions to resign from their roles.

The former lawmaker, who represented Gamawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in 2007 under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, said he was returning to the governorship race to reposition Bauchi for growth and prosperity.

He also recalled contesting the governorship election in 2011 under the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change, where he lost to the then candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Isa Yuguda.

Highlighting the challenges facing the state, Tuggar said despite its abundant natural and human resources, a large number of residents still grapple with poverty and lack of access to basic services.

“Our state stands at a crossroads. Despite our abundant resources, many people remain poor and lack access to quality education and healthcare. This must change,” he stated.

The governorship hopeful stressed the need for unity, fairness, and inclusiveness in governance, pledging to protect minority groups and expand opportunities for women and vulnerable populations.

“Leadership must be fair and inclusive. We must create opportunities for all citizens, regardless of background,” he said.

Tuggar urged the electorate to prioritise leaders with vision, integrity, and a commitment to public service, noting that sustainable development requires collective effort.

He maintained that only responsible and people-oriented leadership could unlock Bauchi State’s full potential and deliver meaningful progress to its citizens.
