2027 Election: ‘I Won’t Contest Any Office’ – El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has ruled out contesting any political position in the 2027 general elections, insisting that his renewed political engagement is to support credible leadership rather than pursue personal ambition.
El-Rufai made the declaration on Wednesday in Kaduna while receiving a group of youths who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by Aliyu Bello.
The former governor dismissed speculations that he may seek a Senate seat or any other office in 2027, saying his concern is to ensure oppressive leadership is removed.
“This is a government that does nothing but lie every day. I am not contesting for anything; I don’t want to go to the Senate. That is why I am calling on you: let us join hands and ensure we remove the oppressors,” he declared.
El-Rufai criticised the performance of the current administration, noting that Nigerians do not need further explanation to recognise its shortcomings.
“Nigerians know what they are facing. They know when a government is not working for them. We cannot continue with excuses and falsehoods,” he said.
The former governor explained that after leaving office, his initial plan was to retire from partisan politics, but what he described as recent “national realities” forced him back into the political space.

He emphasised that his priority now is mentoring young people, women, and reform-minded citizens to take active roles in governance.
El-Rufai urged eligible Nigerians to register and vote, stressing that active participation in elections remains the strongest path to political change.
“We must take ownership of the political process. That begins with registering to vote and ensuring our voices are heard at the ballot box,” he added.
