Enugu Gov Peter Mbah Dumps PDP, Joins APC

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political shift in the South-East.

Mbah made the declaration during a statewide broadcast on Monday, ending months of speculation over his political future.

Explaining the reason behind his defection, the governor said his decision was driven by the need to “connect Enugu to the central government” for the sake of development and regional relevance.

“Today, I stand before you, my people, to announce my decision to join the All Progressives Congress. This decision was not taken lightly but with deep reflection and consultation,” Mbah stated.

“Our great state cannot afford to exist in isolation. We must connect with the Federal Government to attract more development, investment, and opportunities for our people.”

Governor Mbah also commended President Bola Tinubu’s policies, noting that Enugu State had enjoyed massive federal support since Tinubu’s administration came into office.

“Since President Tinubu assumed office, Enugu has benefited immensely from his inclusive approach to governance. His reforms have opened new opportunities for growth, and our people must not be left behind,” he said.

The governor pledged to work closely with the APC-led Federal Government to advance key projects in infrastructure, education, agriculture, and security.

Mbah’s defection marks a major milestone for the APC, which has struggled to gain a strong foothold in the South-East since 2015.

His move is expected to realign political forces in the region ahead of the 2027 general elections and could potentially make Enugu the first fully APC-controlled state in the zone.

Several members of Mbah’s cabinet had earlier resigned from the PDP and joined the APC, fuelling speculation that the governor’s move was imminent.

Over the weekend, the APC flag was hoisted at the Enugu Government House, further signalling the transition.
