Oyo Abduction: Three Terrorism Suspects Sentenced To Life Imprisonment

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced three men linked to the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to life imprisonment.

The convicts are Abdulrazak Umar, also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid; Yunusa Musa, also known as Yunusa Bin Musa; and Shamsu Adamu Sani, also known as Abu Itisar.

Justice Salim Ibrahim, who delivered the judgment, ordered that the life sentences would take effect from the dates the three men were arrested.

The defendants were prosecuted by the Department of State Services on a 10-count charge involving kidnapping, concealment of information and terrorism-related offences.

Before the court handed down the sentences, counsel representing the defendants appealed for leniency.

The lawyer told the court that the convicts were first-time offenders who had pleaded guilty to the charges against them.

According to the defence counsel, their guilty pleas showed that they were remorseful and willing to take responsibility for their actions.

He also argued that the offences to which they pleaded guilty were not directly connected to the kidnapping allegations.

The lawyer further told the court that the convicts were married men with children and had aged parents who depended on them.

He therefore urged Justice Ibrahim to give the men a second chance and impose what he described as a liberal sentence.

The prosecution counsel, however, urged the court to consider the seriousness of the offences before sentencing the defendants.

He argued that the convicts had knowledge of individuals operating in the area and had a responsibility as Nigerians to report such information to the relevant authorities.

The prosecution maintained that failure to disclose information about suspected terrorist activities could have serious consequences for national security and the safety of citizens.

When the charges were read to the defendants in court, they pleaded guilty to membership of a proscribed terrorist organisation.

During their arraignment on terrorism-related charges, the three men also pleaded guilty to concealing information about the planning and execution of the abduction.

However, the first defendant, Umar, was the only one who pleaded guilty to counts seven, eight, nine and 10.

The counts were related to allegations of receiving training, passing instructions and inciting members of a terrorist group based on a particular religious ideology.

The three men were standing trial before the Federal High Court in a case brought by the DSS.

The 10-count charge bordered on kidnapping, concealment of information and other terrorism-related offences.

According to the prosecution, the defendants, who are all from Niger State, allegedly withheld information about individuals connected to terrorist activities.

They were also accused of participating in kidnapping activities and using a messaging platform to facilitate the training of members of a terrorist group.

Following the guilty pleas and subsequent proceedings, the court sentenced the three defendants to life imprisonment.

The sentence, according to the court, will run from the respective dates of their arrest.
