The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.

Ajani said the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, extended warm greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and across the world as they prepare to mark the occasion.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly his emphasis on compassion, humility and service to others.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.

He noted that these values were important to the country, especially at a time when Nigeria needs greater understanding and unity among its citizens.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he added.

The minister also called on Muslims and other Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, stability and stronger unity across the country.

According to him, the responsibility of building a peaceful and united Nigeria belongs to everyone and should not be left to the government alone.

Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to celebrate the occasion with restraint and mutual respect, while wishing the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid.

The minister further assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting lives and property across the country.

He restated the administration’s determination to maintain peace and security, stressing that efforts would continue to ensure that Nigerians can go about their daily activities without fear.
