12 Inmates Escape In Fresh Prison Break In Kogi

At least twelve inmates reportedly escaped from a recent prison break at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, located in the Kogi Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Reports revealed that the prison break occurred during the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2025.
While the exact number of inmates who escaped has not been officially confirmed, government sources, according to Vanguard, estimate it to be at least 12 individuals.
In contrast to previous incidents where armed assailants facilitated inmate escapes, this event reportedly occurred without external assistance, with inmates allegedly fleeing through the facility’s tower.
Although officials from the prison have refrained from making comments, the Kogi State government has acknowledged the incident and is calling on the Federal Government to investigate this troubling situation.
In a statement released on Monday, the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, indicated that the state government will collaborate with security forces to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape and to ensure the recapture of the fugitives.
Fanwo characterized the event as “unfortunate” and reassured the public that the government is implementing strong measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns. This calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify possible saboteurs within the system.
“Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with the Federal Correctional Centre and other security agencies to ensure such security breaches do not happen again. The state government has also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal security agencies through logistics and other necessary resources to enhance their operational effectiveness,” Fanwo stated.
Fanwo commended the swift response of security agencies in handling the situation and urged residents to remain vigilant.
“We call on the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities. Anyone found harbouring an escaped inmate will be held accountable.
“While investigations continue, the government has assured residents that the situation is under control.
“There is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” Fanwo added.
